SR-71 FSX 2022 Edition Changes

Post by Unaburg98 » Fri Jan 06, 2023 5:38 am

I'm been trying to look for and can't find any information regarding what has been changed or added to the FSX SR-71 addon from the 2022 edition and the previous edition. I have the older previous edition and I'm interested in getting the new edition if there are worth while changes that the 2022 edition incorporates for the FSX edition. I see there are a lot of features listed, but can't tell if they are what has been added from the previous edition. I do see some things that are specific to P3D, but I'm looking for what has changed/added for the FSX 2022 edition if any. Thanks! According to my manual I have currently have the 2.4 version a little after 2013.

Hi,

The new 2022 edition main differences/additions compared to the FSX 2.4:

Has a brand new 3D model for both interior and exterior.
Higher resolution textures
Pilot and RSO cockpit models (RSO cockpit is better suited to those with P3D for the displays and the downwards viewsight)
All the cockpit gauges are 3D modelled and smooth
TEB shots are limited to 16 per engine - so you can only use the afterburner 16 times per engine (this uses xmltools)

These are the main additions.

Note that aerial refuelling isn't included in this 2022 model, but can be retrofitted if you desire in FSX.

Thank you for your reply I really appreciate it, especially how fast you responded. Thank you also for the information you provided, as well as all the work that you've done on this aircraft. I definitely want to upgrade and buy it. Thanks again!

Thanks for the kind words. I would definitely recommend the upgrade to Prepar3d 5.3 if you can, it looks a lot better with the PBR texturing.

Hi
Just wanted to say a big thank you for continuing to develop the SR-71, especially for us dinosaurs still using FSX. I'd like to upgrade from FSX but would need a new computer and then lose a lot of payware I've previously bought for FSX so its an unaffordable option for me.
I really like the way this model flies, I think the additional weight and fuel has made the climb much easier to handle than the A-12, it is much easier to control the tendency to overspeed beyond the recommended limits.
For my own use only I've added a functioning RWR(tacpack) and radar to the RSO cockpit by copying portions of the VC script in the panel.cfg from the P3DV5 panel file and replacing the gauges with some gauges that FSX uses. It only works for the wide/narrow downward viewer vc entries not the vc radar entry. It's by no means an accurate representation but adds a bit of functionality. I assume the FSX model uses a different VC bitmap etc for the radar screen to the P3D model.
I don't have any software or knowledge to delve into the model file!
Anyway thanks so much for developing and releasing this aircraft, it is much appreciated!!

Hi,

Thanks for the kind words.

To answer your question, the radar gauge uses the dummy $SR71VC5 texture for it's mapping.

I see that in the FSX version it lists that dummy texture for some invisible gauges, but that shouldn't be a problem since they are all not visible using 1 pixel square.

This snippet is from the P3D version which shows what texture the radar was mapped to:

[Vcockpit07]
Background_color=231,227,231
size_mm=1024,1024
visible=0
pixel_size=1024,1024
texture=$SR71VC5

gauge00=Glowingheat_SR-71!SR-71_SLR, 1,1,1024,1024

Good luck ;) - keep your alpha within limits!

Hi David,

Couldn't resist and picked up both the A-12 and new SR-71. Impressed with both and certainly brings back memories for me of the Mildenhall open days. I would like to add the air refuelling and radar gauges to the SR-71 in FSX as per the A-12 as you mentioned air refuelling could be retrofitted to FSX version in a previous post. I see corresponding autorefuelg and radar1g gauges in the SR-71 cabfile and I've added these as new windows to SR-71 panel.cfg similar to the A-12 and the windows open and buttons work but neither show "live" traffic data. I'm probably missing a trick but can you advise if this should work or is there something else I need to do.

Thanks

Steve

Hi,

I believe you may need to copy over a gauge called SWITCH.xml but also make sure that you added the gauges to the panel.cfg entries/copied them across from the A-12.

Let me know how you get on.

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply but not this as switch.xml already exists in Glowingheat_SR-71.cab file and panel.cfg. Had another play today and eventually found the issue.

Decompiling Radar1g.spb and Autorefuelg.spb gauges in the cab file gave the clue but it was not immediately obvious (at least not to me...)

To get these gauges to work the aircraft titles in aircraft.cfg all need "Glowing" adding as a prefix e.g title=Glowingheat Lockheed SR-71A 17955

In panel.cfg added

[Window Titles]
Window06=Refuel
Window07=Radar

[Window06]
size_mm=280,285
windowsize_ratio=1
position=0
BACKGROUND_COLOR=0,0,0
VISIBLE=0
ident=10007
window_size= 0.292, 0.750
window_pos= 0.000, 0.000

gauge01=Glowingheat_SR-71!AUTOREFUELG,0, 30

//--------------------------------------------------------

[Window07]
size_mm=610,690
windowsize_ratio=1
position=2
BACKGROUND_COLOR=0,0,0
VISIBLE=1
ident=10008
Glowingheat_blend=0.8
window_size= 0.292, 0.750
window_pos= 0.000, 0.000
gauge00=Glowingheat_SR-71!RADAR1G,0,30

Hope this helps any other FSX users out there to recreate flight profiles with aerial refuelling

Ah, forgot about that!

Shame i couldn't get that to work in P3D 5.3 - it used to work in easrlier versions. Glad you sorted it.
